RESUMO

AIM: This research aimed to assess the impact of the online "Positive Psychotherapy- Based Key Model of Courtesy and Integrity" (KMCI)" program on the effective communication skills of nursing students. BACKGROUND: With the growing integration of virtual platforms in psychotherapy education, there is a burgeoning interest in understanding their influence on nursing student's communication abilities. Recognizing how online positive psychotherapy education shapes these skills is pivotal for enriching nursing education and practice. DESIGN: The study adopted a pre-test-post-test randomized controlled design and involved 64 undergraduate nursing students from a state university's nursing department during the 2021-2022 academic year, all enrolled in psychiatric nursing courses. METHODS: Students were divided into experimental and control groups through simple randomization. Pre-tests, encompassing a "Personal Information Form" and an "Effective Communication Skills Scale," were administered to both groups. Subsequently, the experimental group received the "Positive Psychotherapy- Based Key Model of Courtesy and Integrity" program online for five weeks, while no intervention was provided to the control group during this period. Post-tests were then conducted for both groups after five weeks. RESULTS: The findings revealed a significant increase (p<0.05) in the total scores of sub-dimensions, including "Ego-Enhancing Language, Active Listening, Self-Disclosure and Recognition, Empathy and Self-Language Scale" in the experimental group in both intra-group and inter-group comparisons. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the "Positive Psychotherapy- Based Key Model of Courtesy and Integrity" program effectively enhances practical communication skills among nursing students. Equipping students with the ability to integrate courtesy and integrity isn't effective.

BACKGROUND: Pyogenic granulomas (PGs) are gingival enlargements which cause esthetic and functional problems that hinder chewing and maintaining oral hygiene. In this series consisting of six cases, we report the rehabilitation of PG using partly de-epithelialized gingival grafts. METHODS: Following documentation of clinical measurements, a concurrent treatment plan of excision and reconstruction with partly de-epithelialized gingival grafts were followed for all the cases. Six months following procedures, clinical parameters were measured again and a short patient-reported outcome measures consisting of three questions were applied. RESULTS: In histological evaluations, PG features were observed. In the fourth postoperative week, interdental papilla and attached gingiva were restored. Six months follow-up showed reduction in plaque and gingival indices, clinical attachment loss, and mobility. Mean keratinized tissue height was increased from 2.58 ± 2.20 to 6.66 ± 1.66 in the 6th month of operation. Oldest case was stable after 12 months of follow-up and no infection was found at grafting sites. Papillary coverage was achieved. CONCLUSION: If the PG is not completely removed due to esthetic reservations, a recurrence may occur. Within our limitations, we can suggest that the immediate esthetic rehabilitation with partly de-epithelialized gingival graft presents a compatible approach in the treatment of mucogingival defects after aggressive excision of PG.

Having no adverse effects on the consumer's health, causing zero or minimal damage to the environment, and maintaining the nutritional quality of the product are too important criteria for food packaging materials. Edible biofilm packaging techniques are successful to meet many of these features. To strengthen this claim, rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fillets were coated with an edible film solution (obtained from quinoa starch), which attracted a lot of attention in terms of nutritional value. The prepared biofilm solutions were applied in four different groups (control, quinoa, quinoa + black seed oil, and quinoa + mint oil) and stored in refrigerator conditions (4 ± 1 °C) for 15 days. Microbiological (total aerobic mesophilic bacteria, psychrophilic bacteria, Pseudomonas, lactic acid bacteria, and Enterobacteriaceae) and chemical analyses (TBARS, TVB-N, pH) were performed on certain days of storage. At the end of the study, it was stated that coating fish fillets with edible quinoa, which was enriched by black cumin and mint essential oils, had positive chemical and microbiological results. The highest value for pH was 7.03 ± 0.09 obtained in the control group. It was found that black seed oil has antimicrobial specifications via slowing the microorganism development and prolongs the storage time. The TVB-N value was below the consumable limit value (25 mg/100g) in the treatment groups and the TBARS value was lowest (1.62 ± 0.21 µmolMA/kg) in the black seed oil group. Consequently, it is suggested that black seed oil may be used on trout fillets to prolong storage time.

Heterogeneity in symptoms associated with COVID-19 in infected patients remains unclear. ACE2 and TMPRSS2 gene variants are considered possible risk factors for COVID-19. In this study, a retrospective comparative genome analysis of the ACE2 and TMPRSS2 variants from 946 whole-exome sequencing data was conducted. Allele frequencies of all variants were calculated and filtered to remove variants with allele frequencies lower than 0.003 and to prioritize functional coding variants. The majority of detected variants were intronic, only two ACE2 and three TMPRSS2 nonsynonymous variants were detected in the analyzed cohort. The main ACE2 variants that putatively have a protective or susceptibility effect on SARS-CoV-2 have not yet been determined in the Turkish population. The Turkish genetic makeup likely lacks any ACE2 variant that increases susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection. TMPRSS2 rs75603675 and rs12329760 variants that were previously defined as common variants that have different allele frequencies among populations and may have a role in SARS-CoV-2 attachment to host cells were determined in the population. Overall, these data will contribute to the formation of a national variation database and may also contribute to further studies of ACE2 and TMPRSS2 in the Turkish population and differences in SARS-CoV-2 infection among other populations.

PURPOSE: The purposes of the study were: a) to investigate the prevalence of sarcopenia, obesity and sarcopenic obesity (SO) in older adults, b) to explore the effect of nutrition as mediator of the association between these entities and frailty. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Older adults (≥65 years) were evaluated based on European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People criteria for the presence/absence of sarcopenia. Obesity was diagnosed by using Zoico methodology. FRAIL scale was used to evaluate frailty and nutritional status was assessed with Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA). RESULTS: Five-hundred-seventy individuals (68,9% female, mean age 74,41±6,57 years) were included. The prevalence of sarcopenia, obesity and SO were 18,6%, 28,9% and 11,2%, respectively. FRAIL scores were directly affected by having sarcopenia (ß: 0.42, 95% CI: (0.21-0.67), p<0.001) and SO (ß: 0.31, 95% CI: (0.06-0.59), p:0.015), whereas obesity had no direct effect on FRAIL (ß: 0.1, 95% CI: (-0.08-0.3), p:0.26). MNA was a mediator (ß: -0.35, 95% CI: (-0.12-(-0.08)), p<0.0001) in both sarcopenic (ß: -0.69, 95% CI: (-3.34-(-1.69)), p<0.0001) and SO patients (ß: -0.34, 95% CI: (-2.21-(-0.26)), p:0.013), but not in obese group (ß: -0.01, 95% CI: (-0.08-0.04). After the Bonferroni corrections,only sarcopenia had an association with frailty with MNA being the mediator. CONCLUSION: The findings revealed that the frailty rate was higher in sarcopenia (20,8%) and SO (17,2%) groups than obese (5,5%) group. Frailty was associated with sarcopenia and SO, but not with obesity. Nutritional status was found to be a mediator of the association between age-related muscle loss and frailty To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to report the mediator of the associations between age-related muscle loss and frailty.
